Meerlust, Rubicon, red 2017 - An excellent Bordeaux-blend from Stellenbosch, South Africa which is a "benchmark" for this category of wines from that country. The blend consists of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot, with each variety being vinified separately and remaining in 300 liter barrels for 8 months. After these 8 months the final blend is formed and aged for 10 months in barrels, so that all the elements of the wine are harmonized before bottling. Very impressive on the nose, with notes of ripe blackberry, black cherry and plum, fennel, licorice, dark chocolate mousse, cedar, crème de cassis liqueur, cigar, leather and wet earth. Drink now and it ages for at least another 10 years, preferably decanted 30 minutes before serving. Enjoy in a glass of red Bordeaux around 15 degrees Celsius.
